So I'm going to be out of town for two weeks starting this Friday. I need recs! Music recs and book recs.

As far as music goes, in general I go for pop & rock. But I've found songs I like in all genres.

As far as books go- plot, please? I like scifi, fantasy, mystery... anything that's not just romance. Unless it's a gay romance! /biased like woah

Rec, pleease!

And does anyone happen to know about how many characters/words will fit into an entry? Cowboys fic goes up tommorow, omg!! It is at the moment ~28,000 words, so yeah. :D I'm so excited!!

Hmmm, well I've been on a total Rammstein kick lately so I won't be very helpful for music recs LMAO But Rammstein FTW! WOO!

But for books, My Name is Red is really good! I suppose it's mystery, but it's told by many different and varying narrators including, the color red and a tree! I really liked it, so...

Orhan Pamuk <3

It's strange, I've never actually finished any of his books but I love his writing.

Hmm... music recs? Probably Rufus Wainwright, Missy Higgins, Rob Thomas, Amy Macdonald and John Barrowman. I listen to them almost all the time lately ^^

As for the books... I think Josh Lanyon's "Adrien English Mysteries", it's weird corossover between detective genre and romance, but gay romance XD
Also, I like Patricia Briggs' fantasy books ^^

Ehehe, I love Missy Higgins and Rob Thomas! And I loove Rufus Wainwright's Hallelujah, so I should check out his other stuff. And since we seem to like the same kind of music, definitely going to try the other ones you mentioned!

Omnom, I would LOVE to read mystery + gay romance, but my library probably doesn't have it. :( *goes off to look*

I hope you'll like them! <333333

Well, I absolutely love gay detectives, so just tell me if you'd like more recs XDDDD I really hope you'll manage to find it! If not,you could always check out John Connolly's books (it has two gay guys who are a couple, and they totally rock! And they're friends of the main character and he's awesome, too :3)... Connolly is popular so it should be easier to find his books... the series I'm talking about is "Charlie Parker Series" ^^

I'm sure I will! :D

As I suspected I couldn't find the Adrian mysteries :( But I did put on hold Patricia Briggs' series and my library DOES have John Connolly's books! Yay! And yes yes yes I would love more gay detective recs!! *bounces*

I still have to catch up with Patricia Brigg's books, because so far I managed to find only the second part of Mercedes series XD It's so incredibly hard to find good books in Poland... _o_

Well, I have two more recs, Donald Strachey Mysteries by Richard Stevenson and Dave Brandstetter Mysteries by Joseph Hansen (Dave is actually an insurance agent/detective, but he still solves a lot of great cases <3). Those all are my favourites ^^

Argh. >_> And of course my library has neither of them either. The bookstore does, though, so I may have to buy some at some point... all of those series sound so good. :3

on 2010-06-28 06:50 pm (UTC)
Posted by [identity profile] megan-moonlight.livejournal.com
Well you're luck because at least your bookstore has them. Here in Poland I'd have to pay LOTS of money to ship the books here because it's incredibly hard to get those I listed. *sigh* My life is sad sometimes.
I hope you'll enjoy all the books! <3
And if you'd like "Donald Strachey Mysteries" books, then you can check out the movies, too! There's four of them and they're all amazing! <3333 *cuddles Don/Tim icon*

songs - Secret by One Republic, Let Down by Dead by Sunrise, & Bruises and Bitemarks by Good With Grenades

Reading
Book - I am a Cat by Natsume Sōseki.
Manhwa (Korean BL) - Let Dai. <---THIS IS A MUST READ. Not like other smutty, fluffy BL stuff at all. You'll love it, or money back guaranteed. <3 You can read it here or you can download it from mangatraders.com :)

Have fun~

Music - Vampire Weekend, Florence and the Machine, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Miike Snow, Jack Penate.

Books:

The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo by Stieg Larsson
I haven't actually read this yet, but it's been recommended to me by several people. It's the first book in a mystery/thriller series and is, I'm told a pretty easy (though long) read. Most of my friends who've read it couldn't put it down until they were finished.

Middlesex by Jeffrey Eugenides
Won the Pulitzer a few years back and is by far one of the best books I've ever read. A fake autobiography of a hermaphrodite that is hilarious and not emo at all (which was what I was expecting when I heard what it was about). It's about love (there is some romance, but it's a person telling the story of his parents and grandparents), the immigrant experience in America, sex and god knows what else. Amazing book, and pretty easy to read.

ETA: Oh, and don't let the fact that Middlesex is an Oprah book turn you off of it. I avoided it for ages because of that and totally regretted it afterwards D:

Have a good trip!! ♥

Oh, now I have to listen to People in Planes now. It's been recced to me, AND spiky used one of their songs as our theme song for our cowboy fic xD

Thanks for the other recs!

You already have so many good recs here I agree with that I can't really offer any extra. But as far as words go, I've posted a 13,000 word fic without much trouble, but when I was posting the first three chapters of Scar Tissue on my LJ together (which amounted to a little bit over 28,000) my LJ threw up and died, so, you might have to split it up if it won't go?

on 2010-06-09 01:28 pm (UTC)
Posted by [identity profile] cmc42.livejournal.com
28,000 won't work in one entry. If it did I wouldn't have needed to split my 16,200 words Shunsui/Byakuya collab fic into two entries. ^^;;

on 2010-06-09 04:32 pm (UTC)
Posted by [identity profile] rii-no-ame.livejournal.com
This is tragic. I just went to that entry I was talking about and realized LJ had eaten part of it anyway...which would explain why it worked. It's been like that for months on end and I had no idea. o_0

Oh, LJ.

Posting limits are ridiculous. -.-

on 2010-06-09 04:36 pm (UTC)
Posted by [identity profile] cmc42.livejournal.com
Every time I edit my fanfic list at the moment I have to use a program to get rid of unnecessary html code as it's right on LJ's size limit. I'm going to have to split it it's just impossible to keep it how it is now. >_< I used a word counter and that one is only just over 6,000 words in length but it's because the links are so long that it's only just under the size limit. ^^;;

Yeah, I've never seen anyone manage a 13,000 word fic in one post before. xD Stupid lj and it's posting limits. It took us forever to upload the fic today, omg.

Book recs, huh? Well, have you ever read Asimov's 'The Gods Themselves'? It is good, solid old-school sci-fi, and it has a gay romance :D Well, not exactly gay, because aliens in question have three genders, but they are referred to as male, so... I was totally shocked when I read it for the first time - zomg, male aliens doing it O__O I was only 15 at the time, so yeah :DDD But there is an awesome female character too (well, as much as it can be called female, anyway).

Music recs:

I'm currently loving the Swedish band Kent which sounds like this and this

Or if you are more into easy listening sort of music, there is the Korean Clazziquai Project that sounds like this and this

Have a great time on your trip! :)

Dude, that is awesome. I am going to totally check that out. I've read some of the Foundations series and didn't like it, so I haven't read any of Asimov's other stuff. Sweeeet.

Thanks for the music recs too! :D

Foundations were pretty boring, I didn't like any of those books, either. But his short stories are amazing, and 'The Gods Themselves' is great, too (if a little bit of science doesn't turn you off reading, but it is sci-fi, after all).

You're welcome :)

Music: Kaiser Chiefs, Moody Blues. Those are the two that come to mind right now that are at least near the two genres you mentioned ^^;;

Word limit: 65,535 bytes in size which in my experience is maximum of 9,000 words (depending on how much html formatting you have etc).

on 2010-06-10 03:38 am (UTC)
Posted by [identity profile] ravens-rising.livejournal.com
Haha, okay, thanks! :)

And yeah, that's what I saw on lj's faq :3 And LOL we had a lot of formatting! xD

Music recs: Train (especially the "My Private Nation" album), Hatsune Miku, Imogen Heap, Tori Amos, Moby, Panic! At The Disco.

Book recs: Airborn and Skybreaker by Kenneth Oppel. (I'm on a steampunk kick XD)

I was about to rec Havemercy for gay romance and then remembered that you've read it already :D

Thank you!

I used to love P!ATD back when they only had one album out, but I haven't gotten around to listening to them since. That's a very good idea :D Thanks for all the other recs! And I believe I've heard of those novels.

Havemercy is ♥!
